Pubs and Publicans of Tasmania’s Old West
Pubs and Publicans of Tasmania’s Old West – A history of the hotels of the west coast of Tasmania details the story of the late 19th Century mining boom in Tasmania’s West Coast which created a strong demand for accommodation. Consequently, there was also a boom in the number of hotels established in the Queenstown, Gormanston, Strahan and Zeehan regions.
Unfortunately many people regarded these hotels as grog shops conducted by unscrupulous publicans who were out to make money from the miners they served.
This book traces the history of these hotels and shows that, in fact, many were important centres for socialising, relaxing and facilitating a sense of community.
